Am thinking of stripping a steel frame back to the bare metal and then applying a couple of coats of lacquer then leaving as is. What do you think?

Another question is should i need to watch out for anything whilst doing this?

Give it a go,if you dont like it,you can always add some colour.
I think it would look pretty good

On a more serious note ;) when you strip it, make sure you have the metal fully cleaned and degreased. I'd even go so far as to say wear disposable rubber (the type mechanics or doctors use) when handling the frame, as any finger prints you put on the metal and then lacquer over will then rust under the finish and be visible.

I know this as a Technology teacher, so I see the results of pupil's work, and it often gives you a good benchmark of what pitfalls to avoid!

I did this with the P2 I have in my Xizang at the moment - it looks great, a lot of people think it's a Ti P2.

Love this look -just make sure they're spottlessly clean first.
Several very thin coats might be better than a couple.

was going to do this on my DMR Trailstar but let it get a bit of surface rust and run it ratty

I could imagine the 'rat look' coming into fashion, I actually saw a bike in Lesuire Lakes the other day painted to look rusty, it wasnt that good though as it was very obviously just painted.

Edit - Found it: http://www.evanscycles.com/products...2007-mountain-bike-frame-ec014448?style=70257

i thought it would look nice with my ratty VW camper

that FSR does look a little odd with the fake rust
