That's because XTR never changed to Microdrive. The XTR cranks stayed at 110bcd with 46/48T chainrings, as all groupsets had been prior to 1994.

While it is profiled for the 22T to 42T of it crankset, the main parts are.
20 or 22T full stock difference (granny to big)
And a minimum of 10 or 12T big to middle.
Oddly it just depends which version of the docs you read I think.
Other is the distance it can travel so minimum position of granny to max position of big ring.... All in the docs.
Push it to a 48T if you want, worst is it doesn't work quite as well.
