Can anyone tell me if my Shimano Deore XT FD-M739 front derailleur will work ok with a 48/36/26t chainset?

Tried googling it but couldn't really find any good info, any help appreciated thanks.

Ok thats good to know thanks, wont need to buy a new derailleur then.

My legs will have to work a bit harder though....

they were designed for the then 'new' compact chainsets, leaving the old 110bcd behind - the old mechs could go 50t quite happily, and even 52t

the cage is a bit smaller on the M739 and the reach between the rings may go ary as the mech may have to sit a bit higher to clear the 48t

they shift 46t no probs but were designed around 42/ 44 teeth

hmm, current setup is 42 but changing.

Will have to give it a go and see I guess, tbf I'll rarely need the largest ring anyway so if it works for small n middle should be enough.

I'm running a M737 front mech with a compact double 34/48 and a lx front mech of similar age with a 48/38/28 and it works just fine.

The bike with the xt mech also has a M739 rear mech which is, remarkably, working nicely with a nine speed xt cassette with a 34 big cog.

For the life of me I can't work out why shimano moved away from 110bcd, for me they are the perfect size, be it road bike, touring bike or all terrain bike.

its all a long time ago, let the anger just wash away...

wshhhhhhhhhhhhh

Theres no odd combos left at LGF towers anymore but heres one I used to run

9spd shifters with XT 732 mechs, 600 53t chainset, Hope hubs

Interesting, I've just gone from M739 rear as I upgraded to 9 speed but with sram derailleur and shifter.

As I understand it the sram shifter wont work with a shimano derailleur, is that correct? As it is though the rear works well.

Problem is that I put a HG chain on my LX SG chainring, chain was eating teeth

Wasn't sure whether to buy a new crank/chain set or use a 32t single front I have that fits the cranks I was using (temporarily using a cheap shimano front set that works, but dont like).
I've ended up inadvertently buying a 48/36/26t Truvative set, which I don't mind as it will work my legs a bit harder.
If it doesn't work then I'll give the single chainring a try I guess.

Thanks everyone for the input btw.

I've got both LX and XT '9' Speed front mechs that have a larger diameter cage designed for 46/48T rings - they do exist and do fit better.
