Why Catalogue Spec?

Bought a bike on here -

viewtopic.php?f=2&t=379435&p=2817960#p2817960

Originally all XT, now mix of Deore, LX, Mountain, other.

No desire to return to original spec.

Will definitely replace shifters (I have some Deore II) and brake levers - current ones aren’t suitable - V not canti.

Then ride some more and consider.

May change bars & stem.

Each to their own. I guess if your intended purpose for a mountain bike isn't actually mountain biking it might be great.

Would you care to define what mountain biking is then?
And what sort of bike you actually need.

Yeah, i think it looks crap as well. But it's been built to fulfill a purpose that the owner can see/describe.

Much like that green thing on the last page, really not my boat *AT ALL* but i can see exactly where it would be fun to ride, and what purpose it would serve.

I've just been re-commissioning a timewarp 1991 Marin Palisades for a friend's son. Took it out on a test ride on my local bit of singletrack - heavy, awfully unwieldy and slow to run up to speed. I did have the childish satisfaction of catching somebody riding laughably slowly on a full susser though!
I have a 1990 Palisades frame, the same except for thinner stays, which i have used as a drop bar tourer for over 20 years - it is as far from catalogue as you can get and feels really nice.

I build mine as I like them, don't think I ever had a catalogue spec bike back in the 90s.
My current build, a Saracen Kili Elite XTR, is a good example. I've gone for full M900 XTR, not because that's how it came originally but because it's my favourite looking groupset. Chainset replaced with Cooks E-cranks - an upgrade. Forks are Judy SLs, stem and bars - Syncros and Bontrager respectively. I build as I would like it and would have had back then not because it's what the manufacturer said it should have.
