who was 'eddy'?

Please excuse my ignorance, when I will ask what I am about to ask, but this is one of the few online places where I come for knowledge that I can't get any place else.

I know who Chris Chance is, but I am confused about the name of the company. The stickers on the frames read Fat Chance, which makes sense, duh, yet the company is also referred to as Fat City Cycles, right?

I would appreciate if somebody could explain the nomenclature of these great bikes.

Thanks,
Mx

My understanding, is that the company is Fat City Cycles, the product, i.e. mountain bikes are Fat Chances for example Team Fat Chance, Wicked Fat Chance , Fat City also built road bikes known as Slim Chances

Im sure i will be corrected if I'm wrong !

The spelling is not the common nickname for Edward or Edmund, i.e. "Eddie," so I have always assumed the reference was "Le Cannibal," the legendary Eddy Merckx, five time Tour winner and World Champion cyclist.

Chris Chance, now retired from the bike biz, lives nearby and I see him now and then, so I'll ask.

Here is Chris from a ride we took this summer. Check out the garden gloves! While riding singletrack, we encountered a rider on a Team Fat Chance, who was thrilled to meet his guru.

Based on the spelling I'd always assumed the same thing.
