i was thinking earlier about the bikes i wanted when i was younger, and wondered how many of you own any of the ones you always wanted? i always wanted a merlin(any of them   ).... someday when funds allow i'd like to pick one up

Thats the whole reason I got into vintage mtbs.

Now I have all the dream bikes I wanted from when I was a kid...and even ended up with dream bikes I didn't know about from back in the day!

Missing:
Cunningham
Yeti C-26
Klein Dolomite
Don, Ruthie, or Frischi's P-23/P-22

i got my dream bike but it took 17 years! when i was 12 in 1990 i lusted (like so many) after a Klein Attitude Team (white/green magenta), my paper round money only got me as far as a Marin Pine Mountain which i loved. Got back into MTB's 2 years ago and searched for Klein and finally found one, now i want a BackFire Adroit to add to the collection

The answer for me is no, the list is just too long! But you know what they say, that you should never meet your idol as it will always be a disappointment.
I find that the differences between the mountain bikes are a lot less noticeable than with road bikes (must be all those bumps!) The difference between a good road bike and a real nice one are amazing. Am loving the colnago master on this thread!

Back in ’95 I was made redundant, I only received 2 weeks’ severance pay, but had about 9 weeks holiday pay owing. I was lucky enough to find another job quickly and had no debts, so what else would I spend all that money on? I got myself my dream bike, a Ti Boulder Starship (with xtr, magura HS33 rim brakes with TWP levers, King Headset, Bullseye cranks and Marzocchi DH3 forks). I have changed a few things over the years (Psylo Race forks and disc brakes) but to me it is still my dream bike.

i'm still waiting for the day i get a Merlin. i could probably get one if i really wanted to, but just as it was BITD, i still can't justify the price tag. i do look around ebay and forsale from time to time… one day, maybe.

2nd bike would be an Amp B2/B3 or variant (Mongoose Amplifier, RM The Edge, etc). Probably more justifiable for me, if only i could find one, and in the right size.

3rd is the Cirrus I've owned from the start (and the Experience, that was stolen). And since joining RetroBike, I've been slowing spec'ing it the way I originally wanted it built, but didn't have the funds.

For years I went through a phase of dreaming about certain bikes and never being able to afford them so ended up 'making do' with cheaper bikes that I tarted up to replicate the ones I loved, like the Raleigh Strika that I put mag wheels and skyway pads on to look like a BMX or the Raleigh Magnum I put Muddy Fox stickers on.

Then, as I got older I bought my first proper MTB (a cinelli) which eventually grew XTII all over and got a burgandy paint job like the early S-works. Then at Uni I finally got my first dream bike - a Titan 1/2 Trak then came the Funk followed by the Bonty Race, the San Andy and then the Fat Ti which I still own today. This site then caused much weakness and so added a Slingshot roadie(now in another members safe hands), a Roberts, a Bradbury Manitou FS and a Turner. My modern thirst was quenched when I lived in the States and was able to buy my Seven.

But of them all the one true 'dream bike' is my Salsa la Raza that I was able to get earlier this year. When I worked in a bike shop in London I was able to borrow NTi's test bike for a week and fell in love instantly, but was never able to buy one as it wasn't cheap (unlike the modern Raza). That dream never went away and when this original one from the first run of 100 came up I just had to grab it and it has been my pride and joy ever since.

If I was pushed though, the only other bike I want is the RC100 - it was a bike that I looked at and lusted after in the Ron Kit catalogue for years and years as a teen, the real stuff of dreams!
