which music streaming service? opinions wanted

That’s a very relevant point. But of all the material things to purchase, well-appreciated music has to rank amongst the most justifiable?
(I’ve recently paid £90 for an audiophile mastering of Joni Mitchell’s Court and Spark CD. Never spent anything like that before on a CD, but it’s the best production ever and sounds superb. One of my favourite albums, and in the long run might just be one of the best value thing I’ve ever bought…)

Absolutely. It's all about making mindful choices. Charity shops are full of essentially unsellable mass produced CDs & DVDs - which a lot of people will have only listened to/watched once.

Thats a somewhat odd statement when 'the cloud' uses up so much more resources than my Boots Audio cassette player (Tandy NiCad AA rechargeables with about 4 mins playback)

Listen (ha!) I came from the Hifi industry, I know where to stick the Russ Andrews foil and which direction my interconnects travel. I know how to equalise my graphics!

Hang on <realigns Leak Troughline to Radio 3> right, where was I <listens to mains hum, digs out mains conditioner>, oh yes, so many popular albums were mastered really really badly and no amount of hi-res reconfusticatbobulation can make them sound better. Some groups really cared and made sure their albums sounded as good as technology allowed <starts spooling tape onto a Revox A77, snags tape> Dammn and blast!

IIRC, there's a trade off. If you are only going to listen/watch once/few times - better to stream (not sure of exact numbers). If you are listen/watch more than a few times - better than buy a shiny disc.

I've had a Spotify Premium subscription for a few years but I don't love it. The sound quality is okay not not as good as a CD ripped to high quality ogg files. It's desperate to push podcasts and audiobooks on me which I have no interest in. The selection is pretty good, and there are many little-known artists whose music is on there but, equally, I have CDs (usually bought direct from the artist) which cannot be found on any streaming service. I've thought about switching to another streaming service many times and, to me, Tidal looks like the best of the bunch: better sound quality and it pays artists more per stream.
