which music streaming service? opinions wanted

Very old school. I don't use music streaming. YouTube I have adblockers for. Any music I like, I download via a youtube downloader and stick it on a phone. Stick it on shuffle, and with a 1,000+ songs you are unlikely to hear a repeat for a while. Fill up an old ipad or phone, and you'll likely have enough music for weeks of uninterrupted playback.

Youtube is now my main source of video content.

Amazon music used to be a good if you had prime, but like everything else its been subject to enshitification in order to squeeze a few extra pennies. It's near unuseable now.

I had yt premium up until recently and the downgrade from having no adverts to enduring constant interruptions is world destroying.

A friend mentioned revanced for YouTube, but I’ve not got it working properly yet.

I’ve been a deezer subscriber for some time and think it’s a viable alternative to Spotify.

Cheaper via a VPN ;-)

Yes. Think I'm subscribed but certainly I have lot's of his uploads saved to my faves. Liquid/soulful DnB is my thing.
buy the cds, pay the artists

That's not always possible, plus I've actually discovered many an album on YT & ended up buying the CD or the back catalogue - I do still buy & listen to CD's (whilst pedalling old bikes). I would argue having free content on platforms like YT is worthwhile for artists.

Sadly no guarantor of the artist getting paid - but yes, in the main better bet than streaming 'royalties'.

Artists signed pre CD era often had no arrangements for new formats. Some got the same as a vinyl sale, some considerably less. In these cases record compaines would also in some cases charge the artist for re-mastering and marketing for a CD release.

Artists signed in the CD era still got screwed as they took the same or less %age than the vinyl era but the format was dramatically less to manufacture than vinyl or tape but still sold at a premium above both. Record company cut of a sale was therefore bigger.

I had good friend in fairly senior level in a major label in the 90s. They were all warned about the internet, napster, mp3s and the obselesence of physical product. They all ignored the advice and ploughed on because they could make 65% profit on a Bob Dylan re-issue.

A few very large artists were able to circumvent the above and cut special deals...but if you really want to help an artist go to their gig and buy a CD/record or even better a T-shirt from them that night.

Yes. Lots of artists sell these mail order as well. Not too keen on gigs by those I like to listen to.

Of course you can also donate to an artist, or marry them.

Sade never returned my calls.

We have used all the main streaming options at some point, but we generally don't keep up with them.

I prioritise the sound quality, so that narrows it down a little too.
