Which graphics software

Adobe Illustrator?

I have the CS4 Master Collection, don't know what half of it does :?

Then you're all set. Pop your images into Illustrator and trace over them using the pen tool. Use the little boxes and the handles that pop out of them when you select your shape with the white arrow tool to adjust your curves 'till they're just right. Pop the correct colours in (often using pantones or RAL colours for vinyl, your supplier can tell you what they need) and you're sorted.

:)

Having some success

And then I find a font that's close to the one I want (but not quite close enough  )....

I've been playing at making a few decals myself using "Microsoft Digital Image Suite". The software has some useful features such as edge finder and a magic wand to select areas of similar colour. You can use these to pick areas of the decal in the photo and change to solid colours. The examples below are photos that I've made into solid black decals, colours are easily added or changed later.

I might be able to help identify the type face if you like. I'm a bit of a font geek

If you upload what you're trying to recreate it can see if I know it.

It's the GT stuff from '91
