Which disc brakes?

hope for me, reliable strong and cnc alloy does look good, but i was tempted to try some of these for my new build, http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/261294853474? ... 1423.l2649 ( zoom   ) i know they are not the best of bike part manufacturers but they have been arround long enough to have got these brakes right and probably have another company producing them with the zoom logo, for the price i guess they would be worth a punt and if the hope 4s i have now hadnt come up for sale i guess i would have a set now

No comment on the Hope - lot of people love them but I've always been put off by their prices (I'm tight  )
The ones you have linked on ebay are definitely cheap, but you can get Deore for the same price and I'd be a lot more comfortable with them.

The German websites do some very very cheap offers on shimano components so i'd look there personally.

I bought Avid juicy 5's on special offer in 2007. 185 and 160 with hope floating rotors.
Never had to fix or bleed them, they just keep on working. They have a nice feel, not too grabby. Obviously things have moved on in that time, brakes are probably a lot lighter and better now. I would certainly look into avid again when I decide to renew.
I love the look of Hope brakes but the ones I've ridden have been quite rattly and not really that powerful.
Shimano and Magura are high on my list of possible replacements.

ive got cheap shimanos, 160 rear 180 front running new continentals an tyre gives up before the brake, realy good for the money i think, feel safe not spongy an easy to predict

I'm not a Hope fan. I loved my old E4's but the brakes that followed with the Mini lever were awful and I've never quite got past that. Modern ones are mega expensive and no better than the likes of Shimano so in my eyes very hard to justify. I also don't like the looks of the modern ones, the levers look like form over function to me.

But I used to really like Hayes brakes and everyone aside from me seems to hate them!

Merlin cycles are doing some good deals on Formula just now. I've got a few sets of formulas ROs and one set of shimano XT and one of xtr both last generation. ROs much more powerful. Remember with shimano though that there are pretty much no spares available as I recently found out. As long as your in your 1 year (I think) warranty period, you're fine. If a calliper seal goes after that there's no spares and you need to buy a new calliper. And for the lever it's pretty much only one seal on there that's replaceable as well.

Agreed, Formulas are much more powerful.

I've got some of the latest Deores on my new bike and have to say they're great and superb value for money. Mate has some posh Formulas and I'd have the Deores over them any day.

If you've got the money I'd go for Hope as I've had a fair few pairs and love them. Some parts are functional but others make a bike feel a bit more special IMO. The Deores, although great and highly recommended are simply parts where as my old Hope Tech M4's felt special. I couldn't justify replacing the Deores with Hope but will look to get Hope on my next bike, if that makes sense.

Thanks for the advice everyone. I knew the newest shimano ones were popular, and so it seems.

But I think this sums it up. ;)

I looked at all the options but kept coming back to Hope, so a pair of Tech evo M4s are on there way. :D
