Well, starting with a bit of a personal history, I've actually learned cycling two times. I started riding at the age of 4, but soon after that I could control the magnificent thing, something fatal must have happened to the 28er town bike (with a ladies frame, so I could get on it somehow  ) on which I'd learned biking shortly before.
Still needed further practice, but being the 6th kid out of six children, my word wasn't taken too seriously by the family council when elders were considering vital purchases, to put it mildly
So I had to start learning again, as a 7 years old, on knackered old junk, or long forgotten pre-war adult sized wrecks, straight from the attic. MTB-ing just started at the time (East bloc country, '90, no job, no money, many problems).
After various wrecks, I somehow managed to convince my mum, that an old, unloved 20" Kettler Alu-Rad from '88 or '89, will be a perfect bike to buy from a local guy for me, in 1995.
So this can be counted as the first one, and I still got it, almost fully restored with mainly age-correct parts.
She paid for it, but the condition was appaling (e.g.no rubber on rear U-brake blocks, steel padholder on alu rims, niiiice), so I soon started repairing/pimping it from pocket money, and nothing else mattered.
Never managed to buy a new (I mean: contemporary) bike since then, neither I was given by anyone  . But I did buy a NOS Tange Ultimate framed Schauff MTB last year , so finally lost the new bike virginity at least
Looking at the 2015 MTB market, I'm kind of sure that NOS or used bikes will do for me in the future anyway, can't be arsed with these current buyit-throwit marketing gimmicks disguised as modern MTBs.
