Where did it all come from?! Emptying shed leads to meltdown

So I'm terrible for picking things up but after starting to move my stuff out of the shed to the garage I've realised I have tons of bits that A: I'll probably never need or use, B: I don't really know the value of any of it & C: It could help fund my current builds. I just can't believe I've accumilated so much stuff in a relatively short space of time. I'm keen to have a clear out but really don't know where to start. I'm sure some of you guys are much worse so any advice would be greatfully recieved, I'm not even half way through & it's getting daunting!

Re:

The best thing I did was to buy (from Retrobike) loads of those cardboard boxes that you have in warehouses, then labelled them all up with the contents. Built a small shelf the full length of my loft and stored them on there. And made a list of everything I have frames/wheels etc.

Nice one widow, I can't believe how many people leave their lofts unused! Mind you, we have converted ours to more accommodation, so storage is not an option. Since clearing out our London end, we have barely any space for all the precious things we want to keep in heated dwelling space, so all my bike stuff is sat in the workshops. Need to get round to sorting it, as we may be moving a long way away soon!

Re:

My wife is not a fan of climbing the loft ladder so my loft makes an ideal storage area ;)

All I need to do is ambush the delivery driver, ring the front doorbell so she answers run down the driveway round the back and upstairs into the left and she is none the wiser - or so I think

Most of you are suffering from a disease quite prevalent in here, Just in case syndrome.

If you have a shedload of stuff I'd look for the next big meet and take it there with a few wallpaper tables to lay it out on

Well, the thing is, that if a person does own a cool/rare/ideal retro-bike about which they are truly passionate, because it has given them many years of uncomplaining use, service, and enjoyment ... well, that one moment when an important part or component fails and you get that "awe crap ... I'll never be able to source another one of those, so I'm now fooked ..." thought plowing through your consciousness ... the compulsion to ensure that one never re-lives that horrific moment of absolute let-down can easily drive a person to hoard a shed or attic full of insurances that that does not happen again.

Re:

I had a clear out recently to make room and funds for a new bike. Thought I had a load of old tat but still managed to make over £600, without selling any complete bikes (  ), or either groupset I want to keep but don't really need (  ) and then managed to add another retro frame to the collection (  ).

I gained a bit of storage space in the work bench and made some room by adding another hook to the roof, all of which has now been filled.

Re:

Maybe now is the time for a clear out?
A looming house move had me organising all my bike bits the other week, I realised I had stuff I'd forgotten about, mostly modern low end bits and pieces that aren't really worth the effort of trying to sell them.
So most of the bits are going to a friend who has started to do up bikes of all kinds, maybe he'll find a use for some of it because I sure as hell won't!

And then last week I bought a bike because it had a saddle I'd been looking for... just for the saddle....

Went through this a few years ago. I sorted through the bits and only kept those I could use on bikes I had. Some of it I may never need, but you never know.
Stuff you can't use, either sell or donate to local bike charity. Like Jimo says low end modern stuff and generic bar/stems aren't worth posting but can always be used by someone.

Re:

Lots of good advice, thank you guys! yep I think alot of it is "just in case" or I've brought something for some bits & just squireled the rest away  , gonna be going for round two this week so I think it's time to try & be a bit brutal & get some stuff gone!
