Where bikes go to die in NYC

I think i'd rather have my bike stolen than see that sort of thing happen to it.

You see plenty of those in Antwerp too. Nice bikes get stolen all the time, so people buy wrecks instead.
Then the same thieving scums bend the wheels completely and the owners just don't bother to take the bikes home anymore. Why would they? It costs less to buy another cheap bike than to fix the wheel.

It's sad really. I don't want to park my bikes anywhere, so I can only use them for recreational purposes really.
Don't want to ride a wreck either, because I have a tendency to fall in love with it and fix it up completely ... in which case the risk of theft becomes so big that I can only use that one for recreation as well.

that was the classic in pisa, bend a wheel then they would wait for you to undo the lock so they could steal the rest of the bike. or give them time to come back with tools to steal your bike.

I keep thinking i should buy a hack as i have put some much love into my bikes but then as you say, i would do that up to.

I think some of the bikes were simply abandoned prior to being stripped. I've encountered, on occasion, what I would term- "light-recreational types" of riders, who would abandon a bike for a flat tyre. There are also those who have to leave town on short notice to pursue other endeavours consequently leaving the bike behind.

The Brooks company posted the link to the gallery. On that note, any retro mtn bikes ever come fitted w/ Brooks saddles?

Cambridge has bikes like this all over the place - often referred to as 'Darli' bikes as they look like they've melted in the sun.

I once built myself a runaround out of abandoned bike bits whilst living in Brighton.
