I know I've been away a while but where have all the bloody amberwall tyres gone??

Spent an hour looking on the interweb and couldnt find anything.... :?

No one makes them anymore dude.

There's a link somewhere (in auction watch I think) to someplace selling a load of sets of Panaracers in amber wall. £15 a touch + Postage. ;)

Can someone forgive my ignorant heresy for a minute and explain why amberwall tyres are in any way desirable?

I only ever had one set of amber wall mountain bike tyres (kevlar beaded smokes, IIRC), and they were probably the worst I've ever had. The sidewalls wore to nothing very rapidly indeed (cut by rocks / sticks / occasional contact with brake pads)

So, aside from some possible miniscule weight savings - is it purely an aesthetic thing? (Even then I never did like the look of them!)

I reckon its because of the upward trend to have disc brakes, most new wheelsets are going black so using a blackwall tyre would create a cleaner look,i personally prefer black rims with amberwall.
