When to draw the line?

I got up to to 9 part or full bikes before I realised I had a problem and spent some time in the for sale section drying out.

Now I'm down to 2 full bikes and 3 frames. Problem is I've already said I'll have another Clockwork frame from a member and am looking at a '91 Pine Mountain on ebay as we speak.

I have just gone over my self imposed limit of ten bikes. I cannot part with any of them so the logical answer is increase self imposed limit. Next limit should be 15 but it's an uneven number so it's either 12 (one for each month) or a nice round twenty. Can't decide.

How about 14? I different bike per day for a fortnight?

21 is also a good number too - sometimes I think I should have stopped there...

Start 'small' and go for 12. You can seek some comfort in knowing its not too far removed from the first self imposed limit, and yet increasing by 2 the number allowable in the quiver still sets the paradigm for your being able to revise the limit in the future as needed.

I decided to rationalise my collection a couple of years ago. I was re-locating and had too much stuff.

It was quite cathartic.
I made some space and some money, And people were pleased to get some of the > 50 parts and 3 frames that I sold from my stash.

It needed to be done, but sometimes I wish I hadn't :(

I still have 2 bikes here, 2 in a friend's basement and 4 in long-term storage at my parent's place.

I am currently debating over 2 more= Both the same model/ same year.
That would make 4 of the same model (various model years).
That IS getting a bit mad/sad/weird/obsessive, I think

It gets worse - I have similar struggles with the skateboard & Vans shoe collection.

I have 9 Rocky Mountain's.

It all started out innocently when I picked up my first full squish. I missed the hardtail. I picked up an aluminum hardtail bike but I needed a better feel ....... STEEL could be the answer!! Steel was what I was missing so I picked one of those up too ...... but then I thought, “what about a different grade of steel for an even better ride” ....... I better pick up another bike just to be sure.

Hmm I used to ride fully rigid back in the day and I loved it. Maybe I'll pick up one of those fellas too so that I have the all the "feel" I need.

"Wow there's a few bikes kicking around here" and lot of mud in the garage. These are far to valuable to be riding with the kids ......; I know, I'll get another rigid for pulling the trailer BUT it has to have a nice feel or I won't want to ride it.

I hate driving to the store when it's so close and yet so far at the same time but I hate detaching the trailer and the trail-a-bike from that rigid bike that was meant for the kids, just to get milk. I know, I need a "commuter" (even though I work 30 miles from home) I can use that to get milk, ride to the gym; what a great idea BUT it better have a nice feel.

I'm out rolling around on fully rigid, Tange Prestige sweet a$$ ride when I encounter an opportunity to pick up a 1987 Tange Prestige all original and mint condish for pennies. Now I have no use or need for this BUT I want it! So there I am with two bikes in hand. ..........

Fast forward a bit. I'm doing some surfing on the net and spot my white whale. Hmmmm I haven't tried fillet brazed yet. I hear it's dreamy. I’ve wanted one of these since before the chicken and the egg were ever in question. I better grab it.

The cycle continues.

Very true. I managed to whittle my collection down from 7 to 3 but now i need a bike for running to the gym and the shops plus i also need one which will take panniers as i'm thinking on doing a loooong sponsored cycle plus i miss my Hot and i love old Marins and DeKerfs and RM's and some of the old Diamondbacks from the early 90's were nice and i wouldn't mind a custom steel machine and i quite like Brodie Sovereigns as well as..........

For me the lack of £££ is a limiting factor. Should have bought anther 5 Trimble if i'd had the spare £££ :(

When too many is almost enough!

I never let the missus know a figure that way she can't count them and work out there is more, and always move them around if you have more than one storage area. Come to think of it I can't even remember how many I have
20+ I suppose

I thought I was reasonably immune to the upward drift on the bike count because availability of frames my size is not great - but not so! Latest frame brings the potential bike count to 6 plus one I'm building from bits for my daughter in law.

The last one is a vain attempt to reduce the number of surplus parts lurking in the front room and garage and thus appease the OH slightly.

It's the building "thing" that fascinates me - (wierd hobby for a woman!)
