Whats your worst EBAY experience?

Taken from another forum I post on this is my worst which is currently happening:

My eldest has been after a Telescope for a couple of years and at 8 he is probably old enough to start to understand and operate one so I thought I'd get him one for xmas.
Not one to do thing by halves I thought I'd get him something that would last a bit and be decent rather than any old Argos rubbish. So I did a bit of research and found out who's who and what to go for. Also i found out that you can get computerised scopes that have a database of celestial interests in them and will self align to these points to make star gazing easier, this I had to have as he could spend less time aliging and more time looking :D. Man do they cost though, £220 for the cheapest model! So off to ebay i went and found this:
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll? ... K:MEWAX:IT and it sounded just the ticket and with a quick snipe it was mine.
It turned up yesterday and it was the mother of all bad descriptions!
Here's the list as sent to the seller:

1. The 'StarPointer finderscope to help with alignment and accurately locating objects' that is required to accurately align the scope is missing and the scope cannot be used without it
2. The eye piece has paint spots on the lens.
3. There is damage to the eye piece mount, the thumbscrew that hold the eyepiece in the holder has had the head snapped off and the whole eye piece holder will require replacement.
4. The software mentioned in the description is missing.
5. There is damage to the tripod where it has been collapsed without the accessory tray being removed and the support arms are all bent.
6. There is far more paint on it that just a few spots a more accurate description would have been that it was covered in paint spots.

They also couldn't even disassemble it to ship it as it came fully assembled, it's quite unbeliveable really as I had to hide it away and it took me less than a minute to do it correctly.
It is protected because of Paypal but more a laugh at a shockingly bad description.

Well obviously I am not ammused and have asked for the seller to arrange a courier to collect it (why should I pay the shipping for such a badly described POS) and we'll see how they respond.

I guess I have 2 options:
1. A refund and they can take it away.
I'll start looking for alternatives with local pickup options so I can see before I pay and buy.
2. Partial refund and I'll get the parts.
I have speculatively emailed a Celestron dealer and asked how much for replacement parts would be as I could clean the paint off (it's only a bit of emulsion roler splatter by the looks of it).

This has been easily the worst item I have had from ebay description wise, I wonder if they really thought I wouldn't notice or if they will now go into ostritch mode until paypal refund me.

Seller has offered a 50% refund and I am considering it as a bit of elbow grease removed all the paint splatter last night, so I only need to purchase a starfinder scope for £25.

Carl.

Had problems with the last 3 things bought off ebay...

1. Giant Cadex frame - turns out it was cracked. Worked out OK in the end, got a full refund and didn't have to send it back.
2. Control Tech quill stem. Advertised as 1", but turned out to be 1 1/8". Sent it back, got a snotty 'it IS 1 inch, I'm not happy email', so explained to him how to measure quill stems correctly. No response, but did get refund after that, although had to swallow cost of posting back.
3. Mavic headset. Advertised as 1", but you guessed it, turned out to be 1 1/8". Fair play to the seller, he refunded me right there and then.

So can't really complain, it all worked out OK after varying levels of hassle, although it's really put me off ebaying, I wish folks would just take a little bit of time and make sure that what they're selling is either not buggered and the right bloody size.

I've had a couple of poor experiences buying. Thought I'd share what happened selling the wife's elderly MTB a year ago.

It was a cheapo no-name brand with suspension. Since she'd bought a Specialized hybrid in the summer, the MTB had been living under a tarp in the garden. She wanted shot of it, so listed it as frankly as possible, stressing it needed TLC and pick up only, Viewing welcomed.

The eventual 'buyers' asked a few questions, answered honestly. Arranged for them to come round and view, but they were a no-show.

When the 'buyers', (a rough-as-f*** couple) turned up to pick it up/pay for it. The dog went mental at them <good judge of character>. First words out of his mouth "We've come to take a look at the bike".

When I corrected him, that he'd already bought the bike and had plenty of time to view it before hand. He went ballistic, "don't try that with me pal!". Finger pointing etc.

Went down hill from there.

seems i have been lucky with eBay,no real bad stories from me. maybe the worst was the seller who charged £25 to post a frame to me but i got it cheapish anyway.
there are some real dodgy gits out there thats for certain.

I have used eBay for many years and mostly dealing with international transactions.

Out of thousands of deals only had maybe a half dozen 'bad' experiences.

A book didn't turn up, never got a refund.

A motorbike I won and drove six hundred miles to collect was sold to someone else just before I arrived. (Grabbed the classifieds and got another couple the same day so no drama.)

Guy I bought a camera from cancelled my PayPal, saying he wanted cash collection, and then filed a non paying bidder dispute. Nuts.

Guy in California decided the micro Nikkor macro I sent was an 8/10 not a 9/10. I invited him to return it but he refused saying he wanted a part refund. I told him to find an 8/10 for the same money anywhere or go whistle, resting easy with my 2000+ 100% feedback record.

Set of truck lights sent with poor packing, one smashed to bits.

Very expensive valve amp sent with valves left in when requested them removed and boxed. One smashed and a damaged holder.

In contrast, I have had 100s of very pleasant surprises with items.

I have had guitars that turned out not to be 80s Strats but actually much older. I have had a Les Paul that was supposedly 90s but actually 60s!

Then there are all the times people have gone out of their way to be helpful, especially driving miles to deliver amps and guitars to me. One guy brought a mixing desk and stayed for a weekend, helping me get up to speed with it, (and laying into my home brew it has to be said...).

I have bought and sold a lot of vehicles with eBay and have been amazed at how helpful people have been.

This has involved picking me up from airports and trains and feeding me and even inviting me and my family on holiday in a time share!

I just bought a cheap 4x4 after crashing my car, and when I needed to do that the first thing I did was phone up about one I saw on eBay that did not sell.

Told the guy I would be there at around 3pm, as I was going to get a lift there but I found a bus instead so I was there by 9am. Surprised the guy turning up early, I like to do that anyway when buying vehicles.

He could not have been more friendly, and after three or four hours during which I got to play with his 3 d TV, I set off with some of his excellent home made wine and an invite for me and the wife to stay anytime, and I will be happy to reciprocate when he comes up North or down to London.

So all in all I would say eBay is a fantastic way to buy and sell things, run a business, and also to meet cool people!

:)

I sold a new rock shox rear shock to germany, first he claimed he never received it (after signing for it) then demanded that it was used and knackered and I had to refund all the postage for him to return it. He was bit of a dick as he raised the dispute as still being never received it but flooded me with emails demanding to refund money as the item was crap or will leave bad feedback. Ebay went in my favour and deleted the feedback and gave me my money back.

Had another which was my fault, asked my niece to send a parcel for me (signed for was all I asked), later on that day "have you got the receipt from post office?" Can't find it. Did you send it recorded " oh I forgot". You guessed it the buyer claimed never received it and I lost about £100 without a leg to stand on grrrrrrrr. I still buy her crap christmas presents 5 years on!!!

i've just opened a dispute for the hope headset bought there
the seller responded with "you can see what you get from the picture and it is red"
it is faded to pink, it had a very red spacer that came with it to prove the colour difference, so he knew.
the taper ring and cover arent there and the top bearing cover is black, not red.
he recently bought 2 hope headsets himself so knows what should and shouldnt be there
lets see how this one ends...

I sold a load of stuff on here recently, mostly well below market price because I was clearing out old bits and wasn't trying to get best prices.

Wasn't sure what the postage would be for a bundle of stuff, so agreed a nominal value with the buyer for initial payment, and that the buyer would pay the difference between that an the real postage once it was posted.

Assumed because it was through here with someone who has a high-ish post count they'd be trust worthy. Mistake. Told them was extra postage was due, no payment. Reminded them again about outstanding payment, to the response of "oh, sorry thought i'd paid" - still nothing. I won't name and shame yet, but imo he's a w****r. Probably my fault not checking postage first and collecting the full payment before posting. Even threw in a free tyre cos he seemed like a decent guy. T BH it's not the money that bothers me, it's just the blatant dishonesty.

Rant over.

Plenty of crooks on here never mind ebay

Really?

There have certainly been a couple of guys who have been dodgy on here and are now banned, but a tiny proportion compared to the number of people who are completely solid - if that wasn't the case 'For sale' would simply cease to function because there would be no trust.

If there is someone who you have an issue with that we don't know about then please let one of the moderators know. Otherwise vague references to 'plenty of crooks' isn't really here or there.
