Hi All ,

I'm just after suggestions please for an eventual rear mech upgrade as i'm currently using a long caged 7 speed shimano tourney rear mech with a Acera 7 speed shimano SL rapid fire shifter .

The gears are working okay atm but the shifting can be a little sticky going from 4th to 5th so any ideas would be appreciated .

Re:

XT for long cage, XTR mid/short cage, but for short cage 105 or 600 or Dura-ace were also used by some, I used a 105 for several years

Thanks mate although i'm tempted by the 105 as i do know from personal experience that their pretty durable on road bikes but would it be suited to a Shimano HG41 cassette with 11-28 tooth sprockets ?

I am pretty sure, I used to run the 105 on an 11-28 as that was the largest sprocket it would handle ;)

Cheers mate that's the type of answer i was hoping   .

Re:

A new read mech is the best if you don't mind modern then an Acera M360 will probably be better and a similar price to a second hand M735/XT as you've got wear an tear already.

DX and XT being the best 7speed MTB designed mechs.

Your shifters are probably fine a clean up and relube may solve the stickyness.
A good cleanup or change of the cables if you find that to be the problem.

But don't forget the cassette and chain may also be making things worse.

I'd clean and lube it all up first.

Re: What's the best 7 speed Shimano rear mech ? .

Thanks Fluffy but my Acera Shifter is erm "New" as is the chain and cassette and the rear mech is just over a couple of years old with only around 100-200 miles on it so the only problem area will be the rear mech as the shifter an cable works fine and the chain goes through most of the gears without any issue so hence the question regarding the rear mech mate .

Re:

Fluffy's right. Start with cleaning/lubing everything. Cleaning/replacing cables is the cheapest place to start.

Some of the cheap and nasty mechs last practically forever.

Thanks greencat but their is only one gear cable in use and that came brand new with the new shifter and is already cleaned and lubed up and tbh i never use grease on cables as it attracts to much dirt lol .

Just checking - was the cable housing new as well? Have you always had the shifting problem or has it started up recently?
