whats all this mayhem nonsense?

John Stamstad's long-standing 24 hour distance world record is 352 miles, I think 330 at Mayhem would be a startling achievement.

When I did my 1 lap I took about 1.45 in the dry I was pushing myself to my limit (all be it not a high limit) - on the back straight across the field (a grassy gentle climb, bit of a head wind). I was in my granny ring with riders flying past me, more than one asked if I was OK and did I need help, several thought I was doing it solo and gave me encouragement to keep going.

Tips for team riders...
Don't eat within an hour or your lap - especially the pies.
Drink plenty and don't bite off the camel back valve and let your water supply run down your leg 1 mile from the end.
Travel light, you need a spare tube, a pump, a drink and a small multi-tool. You don't need 4 layers of clothing crank extractors a headset spanner and a full socket set.
Don't make Mayhem your 2nd hilly mtb run in 5 years (Glentress was my first 2 weeks earlier)
Do you best not to look like you are having a heart attack with each turn of the pedals.
Don't be tempted with chasing after the young fit ladies that are lapping you, it drains you more, you get delirious and end up chasing a fit bloke with long hair because they look the same in your blurred hallucinogenic state.

God he must have done that almost none stop, the Mayhems all hills i bet thats a lot of miles for mtb and all off road in one go

Im feeling the pain over 300 miles man you would have to be drinking beer thinking about sex or some think doing them amount of mile round there in 24hours

Pinnacle has to be jelly babies on the last lap amble. With dirt.
:D

I'll provide more again this year, wine gums that is, not dirt. Judging by the weather forecast they'll be muddy not dusty though so prepare yourself for a new taste sensation.

ah wine gums, my mistake, they both taste so good!

Looking forward to the tanatalising moist taste, if I get the last lap again :?

Good summary!

The other aspect is Superstrong doing the first lap, in fancy dress, on a way old 15 speed classic Overburys, round in 6th place iirc after a ~40min lap. But he is not quite normal fitness!!

Is there much (any?) single track on the course or is it just that the photographers aren’t prepared to walk to the interesting parts of the track??

It varies from year to year. There's some. It's deliberately not massively technical -- lots of people make it their first 24hr, lots have never ridden at night, so the organisers like to make it reasonably straightforward.

Ever since Roy Hunt won the first solo with the same number of laps as my team that year, we've made "beating the soloist" our (increasingly unattainable) goal :)

Over this side of the globe most 24hrs I've done the organsiers have managed to put in a lot of good single track and yet keep it accessible to novice riders. Its a pity that most mayhem photos don't show more.

When I was racing the 24hrs a little more seriously we'd aim for a podium in the mixed pairs but the best we ever got was a 4th and that was seriously hard work.

One day I'll have to do a UK riding trip and include MM in the schedule just for fun

There is some singletrack, and couple of fun bits, but they not near the campsite, so not handy for photographers.

But generally, its pretty simple - though there was a great steep and techy dh bit year before last, that they had to divert cos people kept chickening out or crashing!
