What year did we start using ahead stems?

I started using them in about 2002 (I'm a bit backward) Cook bros used them on their BMX's in the late 70's

     so does that make me a total luddite then cos I've still never used one???

I did buy one recently for my Pace but haven't fitted it yet (cos I think it might be missing a part......)

All my bikes are still running 'bought in the early 90's' Cattleprods

tomac was 1 of the first to use aheadset as its widely recognised today, as mentioned around 91. inverted for OEM reasons. IE its easier to make 1 long ahead steerer, rather than cutting threads into various length steerers

No... it's all there ,I'm sure! They don't use locknuts :D

From http://mombat.org/Cane_Creek.htm

John Rader , designer of the Aheadset system, meets up with the Dia Compe guys at the 1990 Durango Worlds. Dia Compe becomes the exclusive licensee and sub-licensee for the Aheadset.

1991: Production begins on the Aheadset system by Chris King and Hatta. Once again, the Fletcher office is in charges of packaging and marketing of the product.

I took delivery of my Dave Yates in late 91 and it was impossible to get a 1" ahead stem. (Control Tech had 1 1/8). Dave had to make me an ahead stem as the delivery times for 1" stems weren't realistic.....

That shed any light on the matter for you?
