What year did we start using ahead stems?

it varies a lot - kona and orange for example kept using quills right up til around 1997. many manufacturers had changed over by 1994-1995

Pace invented the concept in 1643 apparently but no-one believed them. So they were burnt as witches. The bicycle was the Devil's instrument in those days. Pace historians rediscovered the concept in 1989 ish but again no-one believed them for a few years

dia compe showed it first at a show in 1990 or 1991, so i suppose you would be ok on a 91 frame, but getting an original headset and stem could prove difficult, as there werent many choices in the early days.

oh, and they didnt burn, as witches are fire-proof.

oh, and it was invented by a bloke in a shed, sold to dia-compe for 'lots of money'.

but i expect the bloke is gutted now, knowing how much more he should have sold the design for.

...sorry too much cough medicine. Pace may well have invented the aheadset as the RC100 had a drilled out Shimano 105 headset which adjusted by allen key. Clearly a forefather of the aheadset dating from 1989 or thereabouts
