Brings back some memories. I remember owning my Raleigh maverick original 15 speed monster for a couple of years. I rode many, many miles on it and loved it, but wanted a real mountain bike. Also I was about to do a 2 week tour of the peak district so needed a good bike. I had my heart set on the current Marin bear valley - 1989, jet black. Saved up my pennies and ordered it from a bike shop in Melton Mowbray, the only Marin dealer nearby. It was up for the princely sum of 399.99 - a large enough amount for a 16 year old.
Mum took me to collect with 400 quid in my back pocket. Saw it in the shop and it was as good as it looked in the mags. Took it for a test and was blown away - index gears - wow! Lightweight and fast!
Came to hand over the money and the scrawny little, tight-fisted, thieving owner informed me Marin had just put the price up to 460 quid and wouldn't honour original price. He wouldn't accept that he had sold it for 400. I was gutted and left with a Jamis diablo - a shadow of the bear valley and a bike I was never happy with.
I should have walked out and told him to stuff it, but I was young and shy.
Bear valley has always been up there for me.
