Think you took his words the wrong way. It was for your own good, someone who's done even a tiny bit of bikewrenching should ideally be able to tell he difference between threaded and threadless headsets, stems, steerers. I don't think it was wrong of him to assume that maybe you were a bit out of your depth on the subject, and therefor wanted to ensure you didn't knacker your bike.
But the best way to learn is to do it, so go for it.
