what to go for, touring or hybrid

I balled out several times in the 70s as a teenager when my sturmey archer found that sweet neutral spot between 2nd and 3rd. I'm surprised I went on to have kids. 😀

But if ballouts are a consideration, the answer is a mixte. A One size smaller frame isn't going to save the day
My mate split his ball bag from stem to stern on one of the quadrant SA levers on the top tube 🫣

I'm 6'1" and picked up a mid 80's 24" (58cm) Miyata 1000 for touring a few years ago. I used it on two loaded credit card tours last year and it worked well. I did hit some rain and have to admit I really would have liked some disc brakes on those days. I also would have liked a bit more clearance for fatter tires to let me ride trails / rougher roads with more confidence (the bike can take 38mm without fenders and probably 35's with fenders. running 32's currently). Going with something newer like a disc Long Haul Trucker or Sutra will give you all the tire clearance and the disc brakes for wet weather / big hills.

I upgraded the bike from DT shifters to bar ends and they work great and free me from worrying about how many gears I have on the back (running 9 speed currently). I am thinking about upgrading from the bar ends to some Gevenalles for a bit better shifting ergonomics.
