What to do with a dent?

Right, scrub most of what I've said. I just looked it up and it's 753 which is heat treated. 653 is made up of 753 rear stays with 531 main tubes and it doesn't look like 531 is heat treated, it's purely an alloyed steel. 753 is heat treated 531 with a smaller wall thickness. So, assuming the tube hasn't split, carefully heating it to get the dent out probably won't affect it. Keeping the tube straight might be a challenge though...

I've already started another thread with this question, but just in case anyone who's already helped me can answer - is 653 definitely not heat tempered? The tube has been repaired and I've had a friend offer to fill any small indents remaining with weld and then powdercoat it (including baking at 300 degrees c). Should I be concerned about the heat weakening the frame?

Re:

I'm lost for words, but I'll find them...only the captain of the stupidity team would ride this frame - and I wonder at the folk who suggest repair. One poster has correctly identified that this damage is not what I would regard as a dent (I'm not prepared to go into fine detail on the technical issues).

With regard to 653, so many times has this come up and been explained (it should be a sticky): 653 is a concept tubeset (531 and 753) that replaced 531Pro around 1986.

Replace the tube, but I'll wager there's a budget issue, otherwise why buy a damaged frame (that's not particularly special) ?

Rk.

I've stood my whole weight in the centre of the tube both before and after the repair. It hasnt budged at all.

And what's wrong with weld filler? It's used on car panels all the time. I just needed to know if there was a particular reason not to on a steel bike which, if it's not heats treated, it doesnt sound like it.

I would imagine that the centre of a butted steel tube is a slightly different thickness and grade of steel than anything you would fill with weld on a car.

Not to mention the tubes been repaired. Work hardening is going to have (some) effect. Especially if you are going to get a welding torch on it.
