Argos replaced a 531 seat tube for me with 853. That and the subsequent re-spray cost £341 in 2006. For me it was worth it as I was on the bike at the time when it was made irrepairable.

Does the frame have any sentimental value or is it something you have always wanted........ then get a new top tube

if not then spend your cash on something which tugs at the heart strings....

No I just spotted a poorly described frame with Reynolds stickers on ebay and thought I'd risk it. I've been looking for a frame to restore myself and fit a nice groupset to as an introduction to cycling.

Got to be worth getting a new tube put in at Bob Jackson. Where else will you get a 653 frame for that price?

Plus you are saving a great old bike from the trash heap.

I have done two or three restorations and you almost always spend more that the bike is worth. Case and point is my '94 Psyclone over on the Retro MTB side, I have about $1000 usd into it and its not done yet. if you are curious here it is:

Anyway a hobby is just that something to occupy your time it does not have to make financial sense (you don't want to go broke either, but that is another story)

Yes that's definitely what I want; something to occupy my time and I knew I wanted to buy something with a bit of work on it. But I'm just leaving a life as a student so at the moment money is a bit tight. I might wait a few months of working and then invest in a new top tube.

Probably not unless you have frame building experience... :shock:

No, that's not technically a dent, more like a couple of creases that have joined together.

Last frame I had like that turned into an instant noodle, weaved around all over the place. (Tho it was far far lighter than a 653 frame)

If it was a regular frame in gas pipe steel then it's no problem heating it up, popping dents out or welding it and it won't affect the strength or integrity of the frame. It's only because it's 653 that you cant do that. Pretty sure 653 is a heat tempered steel and its strength relies on the temper, so if you heat it too much or weld it, you'll lose that strength. Pretty sure it's silver soldered at the lugs to keep the heat down.

But for now try what I said with a bit of muscle. If you can bend it, then you'll know not to ride it.
