What state is retro biking in at the moment?

Expensive, Covid Tax is horrific and the amount of battered crap being tagged retro makes me want to weep

actually the amount of battered crap being called a mountain bike is even worse

sorry, have to correct you there, they are being called 'hybrid' or 'road' bikes as some people refuse to believe that was what was called a 'mountain bike' all those years ago

I've seen both but some of the boat anchor bso's are firmly in the mounting / mountain bike camp at the moment....

Monting bik?

Actually 'Vintage' is getting on my ******* tits - everything more than 6 weeks old seems to be described as ******* vintage

Re:

LGF - Radio4 talked about crime levels and patterns last night, and framed crime as 'driven by capitalism, and therefore adapted to the new market conditions from COVID...' and then went on to interview criminals to examine the way that drug dealers etc were changing what they did and the 'opportunity' which lockdown represented. Grief...it normalises crime as a part of day-to-day market arrangements. Back in the world of retro parts and bikes, some of us committed to cycling simply are not exploiting the silly lift in prices which is going on. The lockdown has caused me to go through the workshop to find stuff - and there's lots which I had simply stored for a Very Long Time - but certainly not push it out at the mad prices which we've seen. Of course, Kleins were just silly for years. Bloody flouro and fade thin-walled coke can nonsense.....give me 853 anytime....

Seems like what happened in the collectible/"vintage" watches market in the last 15-10 years may be happening now in the bicycle world... overhyped rusty bits, jacked up prices, weapon-grade BS, fly-by-night semi-pro sellers, etc. I stopped accumulating road bikes after two because of this, I did not expect this situation in the MTB world :? I should have started some years ago, a shame that the old MTB bug has only bitten me now.

...definite signs...you're right. I remember military Longines going for 20:00 on ebay and now.....argh

Kona locally before lockdown = 80:00 and worth it
Identical Kona on eBay during lockdown = 400:00 and I think silly money.

but there's a real sense of community on RetroBike and genuine horror when people jack things up to ludicrous levels. Yes, things will go occasionally for silly money but I hope that the good availability of sensible things and Karma will continue....

Re:

Needs a small retro ride series again, so we can all meet up and swap part cheaply.
and ride and chat and eat.
