What shoes do you use with Onza pedals? Help needed...

Not a question I thought I'd ever need to ask, but here's the reason why...

I use the first version of Shimano's winter boot and some old Diadora Geko's with Onza pedals on every bike I own. I simply match the shoe to the weather conditions.

About a month ago, I noticed the Diadora's were starting to fall apart, so I started looking for a pair of replacement fair weather shoes.

It was yesterday that I found some really comfy Mavic shoes and chose them because they were the most comfortable. I got them home, and started to put a set of Onza cleats on them. But, I couldn't get my shoes to clip in. After close inspection, I found that the SPD holes are recessed quite a bit more than my old shoes. The grip seems to stand a good 5mm proud of where the old shoes were. I thought about trimming the grip, but was too concerned that I'd make a mess and damage the shoe as there was a lot to chop away. I decided that the best option was to return them to the shop and have a look for some others.

I took an Onza pedal, my old shoes and some cleats with me to the local bike shops, with the intention of carefully checking all my options before purchasing. Sadly, I couldn't find any makes other than Specialized, Shimano and Sidi, and all these seemed unsuitable as the grip section of the sole sits too proud and would sit on the pedal before allowing the cleat to engage (Onza pedals have the mechanism within the pedal body as opposed to on top, like Crank Bros. and SPD's).

So, my question now makes sense, as I need to find some replacement fair weather/xc race shoes that will fit my 11 bikes of Onza pedals!!

What are you Onza pedal riders using?

I use Shimano shoes with my Onzas. All three pair will engage with no problem...

I'm using my old pair of race shoes - Specialized carbons from about 4 yrs ago. No problems, and the newer Spesh shoes (which I also use) have pretty much the same soles.
