What piece of cycling kit/gear is not essential but has enhanced your experience enough not to ever go back?

In terms of modern mtb, dropper posts have been an absolute game changer.

Modern rear mechs with clutches; say goodbye to chain slap.

Regarding retro - sounds silly, but helmet peaks (Troy Lee et al) made a big difference to comfort.

I'd certainly agree with these. For anything other than cross-country, modern frame geometries too.

For commuting, probably electric - either dedicated or conversion. There are two big steep hills between me and nearest town, and I carry everything home on my bike as well as teach until after 9pm on some nights. An ebike has transformed a gruelling slog home, especially in the gale winds, rain and pitch dark that makes up much of the North Wales year. It's the reason why I've managed not to have a car.

To the OP, I never got on with clipless so have stuck with flats.
