Matrix was introduced in 1984. It was intended to fill the mid range gap above the lower end Zeta & Aelle but below SL & SLX. Matrix became Cromor in 1987/1988 when Trek asserted their right to the Matrix name.

Thanks for that data point, I thought Matrix had only been around for a year or so. Apparently it took a while for Trek to act.
