what lever to use whit Avid arch supreme v brakes?

Regarding those slightly-newer ones with the different lever: Since the body of the brake appears to be exactly the same, I wouldn't be at all surprised if they actually DO have a V-chip - or at least an exact equivalent leverage ratio to them. It looks to me as if these were really just a way for Avid to update to the new two-finger lever fashion and to the obsolescence of cantis, without having to invest in completely new tooling. Without changing the actual body and main hinge point, I have a hard time imagining how they'd be mechanically different than the old chip-optional levers.

The pivot point is lower on the body of the SD-L and thus offering more pull. The levers/bodies are not interchangeable from the early SD Ult levers with/without the v-chip, and the SD-L.

Thanks for the help,

just found two photos that shows the v-clip:

The second photo also shows the difference between the three types of levers: the red/silver is the canti brake levers (no v-clip, three fingers), the black/silver is the SD ultimate V (v-clip, three finger style), the all silver is the SD ultimate L (non v-clip, two finger style)

The v-clip works whit both cantis and direct pull, the SD ultimate L only whit direct pull. As RockiMtn writes the pivot point is longer from the cable clip, resulting in more cabel pulled whit less force - so some of that effect is gained whit the v-clip but the "L" design (similar to the more modern "grey obs") should still offers a better leverage for direct pull brakes.

Here's some details regarding the different levers when I first discovered them. Also covers the V-chip mod on the earlier canti versions to make it pull a little more for V-brake applications. Overall it doesn't function as well as the dedicated V-lever.

Great info, and fascinating. Thanks. Wish I'd found a thread like this a long time ago.

glad i could offer some of my experience/knowledge. FYI, the pivot bolt is also NOT interchangeable between the SD/SD-V and the SD-L. The thread diameter is slightly smaller, can't recall at the moment which way though, but i think it's the SD-L.
