The fastest you have ever managed to get a mountain bike up to?

Last year I managed to just squeeze 42mph out of my Kona, using Continental Sport Contact 1.3 tyres. It was spinning out like there was no tomorrow. I will be honest and say I was pretty proud! It was also, naturally, on a long and fairly steep downhill section of road while riding the surrey100 charity ride. I overtook several rather surprised looking road bikes!

Made me think, while watching some MTB vids on my computer, what speeds have you got up to? Ever found yourself on a section pedalling like mad to try and set a personal best?

Lets hear your storys

46 mph indicated on an avocet computer......off the top of dartmoor into tavistock, proudly overtaking a car halfway down!.....i had a 50 tooth big ring which helped.....pretty terrifying really!..........i think i would have topped the 50 mark on a road bike at times, i rarely have a computer on that though. i will be riding to ashbourne in the next few weeks and if the weather is ok i will open it up down the hill at draycot in the clay....if anyone knows it they should agree 50 would be on the cards!....the A50 toward stoke as a nice re-entry zone too!....

The fastest I've ever been on a road bike is 50mph, on a long downhill near Langsett Reservoir.

The fastest I've ever been on an MTB is in the Peaks, on a gravel track to the south of Mam Tor (can't remember exactly where unless I check a map). That was 50mph too!! Eyes streaming, bike going haywire, thankfully no corners and disc brakes helped at the gate at the bottom.... :D

some very impressive speeds there! I reckon I could just about keep up if I was running something bigger than the standard STX chainset!

As for stopping from 50mph on a MTB - thats very good going! Though I would like to point out that I only had a set of canti's to stop me when I was really going for it and they are 'dubiously' set up at best . Pretty sure I bedded in my Kool Stop pads from scratch in about 20 seconds that day

I reached 46-47mph down a massive hill in north Dorset. The brake fade from my 1990 LX cantis was a little worrying though!

I used to run a 50t Pace ring BITD and I used to spin that out but I never had a computer to log speeds. :-/

I miss my outer ring on my modern bike ...

Indicated 45mpg coming down steep tarmac road from Pentlands on a semislicked full susser. Gave me the fear, kept thinking bicycles are not meant to go this fast, what if something fails.....gulp
