What is a suitable replacement for a 98 Rockshox Judy XC

As for year, I would say 1998
They have the 1998 Judy XC 'Rockshox' sticker band. They are just in a black colour, I assume requested by the bike manufacturer.

They'll have a C3 cart in, which are their best ones. And Type-3 springs in, so a full set of springs, no MCU/Elastomers to worry about and yes they have a bit of lubricating oil in the bottom.

Pull them apart you'll find out.

Yes there is - there is an oil bath in the bottom of the forks in Judy 98 XCs'. Use 5wt shock oil, a syringe with 5cc; undo the bottom bolts, knock them through and squirt the oil in. Good idea to hang your bike upside down for a while to let the oil seep past the bushings.

That's not an oil change, that's just a bit of lubrication oil instead of 'grease'.
Not until the Hyrocoils a bit later is there an actual oil bath used for damping. (if you ignore the damper cart)

(hence the as such... and then in the service Grease everything up, drop the required cc of lubing oil in the bottom if needed or do it anyway. )

for the info you are technicaly [wrt this forum] talking about non-retro bikes. judys are let off until they turned hydrocoil as they are basically the same. fox are modern as are most the forks you are looking at. so have a search of the 98+ section. as for marzocchi then look at z1 or z2 bombers and superfly/xfly bombers [these last two are the high end air-oil versions of the standard bombers] look in the archive for technical data on them from late 90's to early 00's

Id avoid fox due to the amount of them for sale with serious wear to the stanchion coating.Ive no idea why theirs wears so badly when you consider early bombers could be in use for several years without so much as an oil change or service,and still has next to zero wear on the stanchions.

Modern stuff seems to have a very short life expectancy :?

A bit more to add to this thread. It took some time and a fair amount of dogged research to find another Rockshox Judy XC. Except for the length of the steerer tube (185mm versus 215mm), it is the same fork, albeit somewhat more used and banged up. My original 215 mm fork is in excellent condition. However I like to have spare parts on hand for when they are needed. Hence the search for a spare fork, replacement parts, or a replacement fork.

Now that I got one to “play” with, I could us a bit of advice/tips/suggestions from the RockShox gurus herein. As noted in the earlier portion of this thread, I prefer to do my own work. I also am aware (as has been noted by others herein) that it would probably be cheaper to just get a different fork. However, having it, I’m of a mind to give it a go.

The condition of the fork is mixed. The uppers are pretty good, the stanchions show no scratches or abrasion wear there at the wipers seals. The crown and steered are in pretty good shape.
The lowers show modest wear paint-wise. The dust boots are pliable, and cleaned up well. ArmorAll got them nicely supple. The wiper seals had a bit of caked grime. A tooth brush , TriFlo, and compressed air cleaned that up. The paintwork is rather scraped up, scratched, paint missing in spots, and the decals worn/badly gouged.

Once I got it cleaned up and the stanchions oiled, I tested its compression/rebound. Seems OK. So I’m going to try my hand at rebuilding this one, and posting the process and progress herein. Some questions…

Disassembly. Apart from the Owners Manual, is there any other graphical documentation on the disassembly, and rebuilding process to be found. Any YouTube vid clip links? Any tips on what to look for.
Repainting the lowers. Rattlecan, professional spray, or powdercoating? What kind of primer needs to be used on the aluminum alloy lowers?
Replacement parts. I’m probably SOL here. Tips or suggestions from the gurus here?
Replacement decals. Are these things still available? If so, where?
Steerer tube length. Can it be removed and replaced with a longer one?
