What grease would you recommend...?

Rock n Roll do a lot of different greases for different purposes, but all in all a bearing grease will do bearings fine

Super Slick is great for sus forks rebuilds and I use in other places as I have it handy and not had a problem, plus it doesn't seem to drag. Keeps hope hub pawls quiet yet not sticky ! Big plus to me there.
They also do a web tacky grease for heavy duty bearings.

But a tub/tube will last quite a while, just buy something an use it.

If it's thick enough to stick to stuff and slippy at all temperatures it will encounter it's good enough

You can pay loads for 50grams of this and 67.9grams of that

I feel you need to be quite liberal in your application of grease (pack bearings in the stuff) so costly miniature tubes don't appeal to me

Personally I have a 1/5Kilo tub if Castrol LM, it is the only stuff I have ever bought, last tub cost me £4.99 about a year ago, still got about 3/4 left!

You can get it in any car bits shop

None of my hubs have ever worn out... Any time I rebuild a bike I always strip and repack the hubs bearings - Wobbly or notchy wheel bearings drive me mad

I can get the castrol grease suggested as it's easier for me to get from the local motor factor, but they do a castrol cm which, apparently has better wash out resistance than the lm version.

Castrol CM is a calcium based grease.
It's fine for lubricating things like shackles, tow ball hitches, and boat trailers but is not designed to cope with heat, friction, and shear forces in bearings.
I'd stick with Castrol LM as it is Lithium based and is specifically designed for bearings and high temperatures.

But... any grease is better than none

Grease 2 with Michelle Pfeiffer was just utter pants......

Thanks Alexp5, I actually read that shortly after my last post so will stick to the LM instead.

None of the Grease films were any good, IMHO...!
