What grease would you recommend...?

Hey,

Just putting this one out there, as I am getting several different opinions!

I have recently stripped my '95 Lava Dome and have taken all the rear wheel to pieces. Its pretty gunky, but just from old lubricant and age. The bearings look fine and the cones are in remarkable shape, which stands to reason as the previous owner said the bike didnt get much use.

Anyway, I am close to getting to regreasing it all up for reassembly and wonder what grease I should use? There is a good Finishline grease I found, but at £9 for a small tube seems a bit steep. Other bike sites (which on have only visited once, I promise ;) ) have recommended Marine Grease for trailer bearings. I have a lithium grease, but was told it is not ideal for hub bearings.

So, what do other people use? Surely someone else must be in this situation?! Some of the info out there goes into serious levels of detail!!

Thanks for any help

Dan

I use white PTFE grease, but only because I can get it for nowt from work in handy little 6cl syringes

Thanks for your advice! Unless anyone comes up with any counter suggestions that thwart my decision making, I shall try to scout some out!

I asked a similar question of someone on here recently..... and he recommended Rock n Roll Super slick grease.

I've read up on the stuff and it comes highly recommended by others, it would appear... So I ordered a tube.

£7 is not too bad in my opinion, and I'll report back once it gets here and I've done a headset/bb/hub with the stuff..

Big-arsed, super-dull, ordinary car axle bearing grease for about a packet of choccy Hobnobs per litre from your local garage mechanic. The white stuff is poo in rain and washes out in my experience and Silkolene's purple RD2 ceramic bearing grease was " discovered " by mountain bikers a few years back and so underwent a 500% price increase ( thanks Silkolene; go kiss my un-waxed @rse crack ).
Go get a nice mini grease gun for no more than a tenner for an exponential increase in grease application ease.

ACF-50 Corrosion Block grease. You can get it in a small 57g tube for about a fiver. The tube has a small nozzle so you won't need to buy a grease gun.
And it's blue, which in itself is a good enough reason to buy it!

I'm enjoying the fact that, while looking for a common response from a few users for a popular option, I have got 4 different suggestions so far!!

I am still just starting the cleaning stage so have a while before I must buy some, but it will be fun to see how many different options there are out there!

Thanks to all for your advice/suggestions so far. Its nice, particularly as a newbie, to have a community of people willing to help each other out :D

grease

being at the seaside i use white boat grease if its good enough to keep out sea water and sand its good enough for me

I use different greases depending on the job.

Silkolene Pro RG2 - for wheel bearings.
Finishline - for general assembly applications, the new stuff is much better than the stuff we used BITD.
Stendec pivot grease - for suspension pivots and forks.

Then there are the anti-sieze compounds:

Copper Grease - using less these days.
Park assembly compound - fantastic stuff, my new favourite.
Finishline assembly compound - super sticky, great for BB installation.
Ritchey liquid torque - essential for carbon assemblies and slipping seatposts.
