Alpinestar had some kind of combination where the headset was 1 1/4 threaded to mounts the fork, but the fork took a thread less stem that was a custom size between 1 1/4 and 1 1/8??? Correct me if I'm wrong on the custom size thing.

My 1990 Saracen Trekker Comp has a Deore XT "Super Oversize" 1-1/4" threaded headset:

It's a 7005 ally frame along with the regular Trekker from that period
