What estate car?!

Wow, lots of replies!

Disco - nowhere near big enough unfortunately, in fact I find them generally a lot smaller than you would think?
Omega - not a bad idea but the majority are rusty and have been to the moon and back.
Volvo V70, yes a bit small really.
Octavia estate - good idea, one I hadn't thought of. Would probably need to add a trailer to make it big enough though.
Passat TDi, yes! But pricey for a diesel that doesn't have stratospheric miles on it.
Vectra - don't trust GM Vauxhalls
T5 - good fun but probably too thirsty.

discovery - heavy, unstable, slow, thirsty and you have to fold the seats down for anything over a paper bag.

:D :D :D :D :D

^ this.

Mind you a newer 4.6 on gas isn't too bad.

V70 small?

Are you thinking of the V40?

My father in law has an 07 plate and its huge.

The Skoda Octavia estate is a pretty good car, but maybe not quite big enough for you.

they are golf estates and a wee bit shmall

I borrowed one a while back and would say it is a wee bit bigger than the Golf, and will be a damn site cheaper second hand.

they are not as cheap as you would expect and have all the same issues as any seat/ VW/ skoda - electrics, cam belts, water pumps, all finicky pissy annoying faults.

I had a '98 model, a '50th Anniversary' model (2 years old when I bought it), & it was certainly big enough for most stuff I wanted to use it for (remember it's a high load-space as well)
Yes!!!, mine did get used on ByWays & RUPPs (as well as 'pay & play-days')

They can be 'roly-poly' handling though, due to being a lot taller (& a higher 'C of G') than the ('proper') Range Rover that donated the mechanicals & the inner body-structure.

Very sadly, possibly due to the misheld belief that "Land Rovers last forever", or too poor a rust-proofing at the factory, they rotted out in the footwells/inner-sills & rear-floors

I had to be brutal (or be towing the 'BWSOW') with mine to get less than 29-30MPG as a day-to-day average figure (300Tdi, manual)

I almost bought one before the Discovery - the 2.5Tdi (with the B*W 6-cylinder), still regret it in a way, despite how good the Discovery was.
(it wasn't heavy enough to be safe with the 'BWSOW' though, so the Discovery wasbought - to take its place alongside a 90-V8 CSW - t'was nice having 2 Landies for a while)

After all, dozens of Police Forces can't be wrong, remenber how many Omegas you saw as Traffic Cars on the M-ways?
Most days, in my job, I see lots of Traffic Cops & the older ones still regret the passing of the Omega & Senator

Wouldn't have thought so, but I know they're not as big as the old 740's & 960's (we had a 740 estate for a while. And a V40)
Just for a guide to prices to ex-traffic cars (don't foget.... top-notch drivers & serviced on the button)

Damned good build quality though - so you can forget all the crappy jokes

Even the mid-90's models??
(ie; http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Volkswagen_Passat see 'B4'/'B5' details)

My V70 is huge! the only downside is that it is officialy the hardest car to park in the world. Turning circle of a canal boat.

Copy that, the V70 has taken over as the other big estate that takes everything including the kitchen sink.

Merc E Class being the other.

:)
