What do you think of Shimano ditching rim brakes in 105 and higher?

I've got about 7 pairs of good quality rim brakes, and 4 pairs of 'good ' wheels which I rotate on a regular basis. I've only changed the pads on my go to bike once in 3 years, so I reckon I'm sorted till I die!
Tbh I can't see me ever buying a new bike again, it's steel or second hand carbon for me, so Shimano can go stuff itself!
 
not yet worn through a wheel rim yet but have seen plenty go. Mavic crossmax always seemed a bit soft

have had plenty of worn discs though, which has been frustrating when trying get brakes to bed in properly
I have Mavic Crossmax SL SSC rim brakes on two mountain bikes and Mavic Cross Max Mk1 rim brakes on one mountain bikes , never had any issue despite the fact that I don't baby my them. I also have a spare set of Mavic Crossmax Mk1 and a spare set Mavic Crossmax SL SSC rim brakes.
 
Had it on the MTB side a few times. Fair enough.

A good solid 700c rim like Mavic A719 or even A319 just lasts. It would probably die in a pile-up rather than wear statistically speaking.

Ceramic rims just last too, but are a fickle thing with brake pad selection.
I agree I have A719 on my hybrid gravel bike . If you want a rock solid Mountain rim brake rim, then the Mavic XM 819, XM719, XC 717, EX 823, D519 and EX 721 laced to good hubs will make you indestructible wheels. 3 of my MTBs have XM819 rims, 2 of them have D521 rims , one will have XC 717 and one will get the EX 721

I use mainly Dura Ace 7700 and 7800 rim brakes on my road brakes as for disc brakes I don't want them. And braking with rim brakes requires skill especially in adverse conditions.
 
Unfortunately rim brakes are now obsolete so stock up while you can. Also, as grantoury says above, tektro will become the rim brake provider.

I do wonder how the drive for ever more complexity of a bicycle will end.

There has been talk of wireless braking for a while. I guess this has been brought about by the aero driven struggles to route hoses etc through a headset. Nuts!

Colnago may have thrown rim brakes a bit of a lifeline of late with the launch of a new rim brake frame. More of a headline grabber than sales driver I'd imagine.
 
I've noticed the second hand price of 10 speed Shimano rim brake STIs seems to have gone through the roof and availability right rock bottom.

Only one second hand pair of 105 ST-5700 on ebay.fr - in Japan too for 200€ o_O

Doesn't seem that long ago this stuff was getting dumped off really cheap just for the sake of that extra sprocket and go 11 speed with rim brakes or new fangled mechanical disc brakes.

Can only suspect there's a few people out there that want to hang on to things like 10 speed triples, mixed set-ups with MTB parts, cantilevers etc. There's probably lots of knackered or broke Tiagra / Sora / Claris destroyed on the commute which adds.

Probably going to be cheaper buying an older carbon road bike for the gruppo and promptly dumping the frame set at the moment.

Ironically there's much more 11 speed hydraulic stuff about going cheap. :rolleyes: A bit weird.
 
10 speed was dumped because the shifting is poor, too short cable pull with 6 speed heritage running across 10 sprockets! - later tiagra (4700) 10 and road 11 speed massively increased the cable pull.
Consequently stock of old 10sp 105/ultegra stis was flogged off at half price for a couple of years.

I think people have discovered though that old road 10 is cross compatible with 7/8/9 mtb rear derailleurs, meaning touring setups (oh, sorry, I mean gravel adventure😉) are inexpensive and adaptable.

You just need very clean cables, preferably not internal or full cable runs.

And now that surplus is gone🙄

Exactly. Looking in my records I bought:
- 2 x pairs of new 5700 STIs (a double and triple) for 280€
- 2 x new 5700 long cage rear mechs for 60€
- front mechs were practically growing on trees and you could take your pick.

I love tinkering with this stuff but not ridden it much :rolleyes: . I absolutely stayed clear of the Tiagra 4700 - the Tiagra 4600 with gear cables out in front just doesn't seem to want to give up - always smooth and never ghost shifted. The Sora was pretty inferior, especially the left hand shifter.

I dumped all my 11 speed off a few years ago now.
