What do you consider to be the best retro MTB stem?

I'd say a Syncros cattleprod or a Salsa roller stem, any true retro stem has to be quill type of course ;)

Re:

Girvin flexstem, they're just too cool for school

And pace rc100 stems, but they need to be attached to a 100 haha

Re:

Everyone seems to slate Girvin Flexstems but for just one year BITD they seemed to be on nearly every other bike I saw..... Anyway moving on.....

Depends on the bike but I think Syncros, or original Answer Atac, are never outclassed by any build & still have reasonable availability. Best budget buy I'd stick my neck out to a shower of arrowheads & say a Club Roost I Beam can't be faulted. As an OEM choice Kona Velocity were solid but if 'The best' goes by what people are willing to pay then a NOS FTW noodle stem with an old semi crumbling install sheet might be near the top of my wish list.

Re:

Best Retro Stem? Any stem that isn't 150mm long with zero rise, according to my lower back at least
It depends on the build but what looks right and, more importantly, what fits for the bike to be ridden comfortably determines what goes on my bikes.

Personally I favour the old school Salsa steel stems. But for the moment I'm looking for an ahead stem in 110 mm length, not an easy length to find a Salsa in ...
