What bike's this anyone?

My neighbour has approached me keen to find out the make and model of his old steed (couple of pics here although unfortunately not gearside). The bike had already undergone a crappy respray when he acquired it and all he was only told back then it was of English origin?! The Biopace rings and familiar Shimano thumb shifters are reminiscent of my early 90's Scott Boulder so I can only assume it is of this era but otherwise I've no idea. The rear brake hanger, a nice touch, might be a clue for anyone at all in the know?

Re:

Difficult to say with those pics, but a random guess at Diamond Back ?

Get some better pics of dropouts, hanger, BB area and cable routing and i'm sure someone on here will ID it :)
Oh and a serial number if its got one.

Cheers

Re:

Thanks. I'll take some better shots myself and post soon. Mysteriously (or maybe not), I did look for the serial number under the bb but it looks to have been removed!!

Some detail shots now taken, which may help?

Re:

+1 for Saracen

Re:

Many thanks for looking into this and I'm in agreement drystonepaul! I've passed on the news to my neighbour who, unlike myself, isn't a biker but is keen to sell this old steed so any further advice on how to go about this via retrobike would be appreciated?

Loving the poster too which takes me right back to the heady days of South Downs mud plugging, purple bits and Mint Sauce! I still have an original Etto lid from this era sporting such colours in fact. Not to mention a vgc 94/95 Kona Kilauea (16" white) from new which I still own & a 98 Marin Rift Zone (in bits) but we'll go into them another time maybe.

Disappointingly, the answer is to put it on ebay with a low starting price. Like £20. At most. A Tufftrax in A+ condition isn't worth much more than £100 (see eg viewtopic.php?t=127750) and this bike is not in A+ condition. There's a Tufftrax on ebay now finishing in a day's time (in much better condition) so you can watch how it does:

To get big money a retrobike has to combine excellent condition with a reputation for performance, historical significance and rarity. This a bike that was sort of the equivalent of a Morris Minor and needs a lot of work done; it's not going to go for the price a gullwing Benz.
