What Bike for the Apocalypse?

  That Cogburn is one piece of Mad Max bikery :D I suspect the addition of the chainsaw from the shopper would complete things.
Oddy i was being semi serious: would you go for steel cos it's weldable / brazeable, or ally/ titanium cos of lack of corrosion? Sus or rigid? Would you loot a bikeshop full of bikes, tools and bits or hole up in your own Mancave?

I am writing my first novel at the moment, if I get a chance to write another it may involve a survivalist MTBer...

And Al: yep, perfect desert Island bike :)

True what you said about end of the world movies. One proof that Hollywood guys don't cycle is that in all those films, as soon as they run out of oil, they walk or go on horses. There will be so many bikes forgotten in sheds when that happens that cyclists will be the alpha citizens running the world...!!

I don't know that a bike is a great form of transport post apocalypse - if there's a breakdown of civilisation. You are quite vulnerable on two wheels.

Re:

A Fat with late 80s XT no nonsense running gear and a selection of suitable weaponry velcroed to it  In all seriousness, if some unusual event like a WWIII, a massive asteroid strike or electrical outage occurs, AT bikes will be pretty useful ;)

That point aside

Has to be easy to fix :?

Will be interesting to see how the Darryl Dixon character's new bike holds up in the forthcoming season of Walking Dead. I think that's the ultimate litmus test, right? ;-)

Meanwhile, I know this isn't retro, but I just happened to run across this Salamandre Cycles touring bike recently. It has several features that would be a must for me - Fat tires, a Rohloff drivetrain, steel frame, and room to carry lots of crap:

I'll take the version with mountain bike handlebars.

Bombproof rigid singlespeed / Rohloff / Sturmey 3 with a fully enclosed oil bath chain case would be my choice. 1930s Sunbeams with the oil bath are often still on their original chains! The only thing to worry about would be punctures and wearing out the tyres and brake pads.

Oh god my answer is totally boring! I was thinking, assuming there is road, you'd want a fast road bike. Less time spent getting from A to B the less likely you are to run into danger/a problem. (Not sure if that's correct, but suspect less time on the bike = less chance of a problem??). Plus the faster you can go, the further you can go and get back, which might have its benefits. I think a cammo road bike with a pouch for a ghillie suit would work. Get away sharpish and hide. Or hide then get away sharpish.

I just googled this bike...lovely bit of engineering and design.
