Basically the main positive is that narrow rims make for a very round tyre profile..the main negative is that narrow rims make for a very round tyre profile, haha.
Aside from the brake geometry issues its also easier to pinch flat on skinny rims with wide rubber, but most retro appropriate tyres aren't wide enough for that to be an issue.
I have 19mm wide rims with 2.35s on my 29er and have no issues.
