Welding a steerer tube

Cannot agree with any of the above, I had a 1 inch sycros fork welded within the last few month,s by a member on here.he is a reynolds 753 approved builder with plenty of experience.also if you sleeve it,how will you get the stem in?drop me a pm and I will give you his details

Just repeating what Dave Yates told me when he did mine. Do the sleeve low enough and it will not impinge on the stem. I would be more concerned about tightening a stem wedge across an unsupported weld in a steerer-seems like an instant was to crack the weld. I'd go with Biglev and Dave Yates on this.

I thought some steerers were waisted (internal) just above the crown area?

It's not just a case of welding as that would not be strong enough. A better way is sleeve, pin and braze - an internal sleeve is added and the the new section can be pinned onto the sleeve and brazed in. I have a set of Fat Chance BOI forks that Dave Yates extended but I would question whether the excessive heat might affect the crown on a set of Quadras or if you are better either getting a new steerer pushed in or just find another set.

Blimey, what a load of faffing about (he said, altogether far too predictably! ), just use one of these and have done with it ;)

Brilliant, that does save a hell of a lot of faffing!Think i'll be ordering one of those! Thanks for that.

I just completed my maiden ride on a GT Zaskar with a 3D fork we converted to threadless and lengthened using Rody's youtube video as a guide. Came out great and now the bike handles great with the correct fork. We used a old Trek showa 1" steer tube as a doner insert and it was press fit before even firing up the tig welder.
