Welding a steerer tube

Just out of curiosity has anyone welded an extension piece onto a 1" steerer before?
I have a really nice set of rock shox quadra's but the steerer will be too sort, I have a number of rigid 1" forks that I could cut a piece off and know a very good welder (aviation repairs). So I wondered if anyone had tried this?or is it dangerous?

It's not just a case of welding as that would not be strong enough. A better way is sleeve, pin and braze - an internal sleeve is added and the the new section can be pinned onto the sleeve and brazed in. I have a set of Fat Chance BOI forks that Dave Yates extended but I would question whether the excessive heat might affect the crown on a set of Quadras or if you are better either getting a new steerer pushed in or just find another set.

I had a threaded steerer converted to a-head. They just cut the steerer at the thread and welded a new one. Look good and strong. Could see the weld.

Dave Yates will do it for £70

Yep I sleeved and welded a pair of project 2s to convert threaded to ahead.
I have been pounding them for about 3 years on rooty trails with a body weight the wrong side of 16 stone  no probs

Yes i have done this a few times.

The correct process is to cut leaving 3-40mm standing. file at 45 degrees

drill 4x 3-5 mm holes round the tube

incert a 22.2 mm cromo incert

Cut the new steerer to lenght.

Put 4 wholes in that and file a angle

Asemble and to a angle iron or fiture. Check the stem goes in far enough, i.le the incert is nto too long. Tack using the hole and check alignment. then weld the holes and check again (if its wrong you can simply drill out)

Finally weld round the tune in 4 sections. 90 degrees, then the opersite side 90 degree then fille the rest.

Check alignment and file and finish.

You can do this with brasing (9% nicke rod sif no.2) or tig weld with a cromo or hi carbon steel rod.

Any questions let me know.

Thankyou for all the replies, I might give it a go then. I know they are only quadra's but they are in nice condition and I need to save some pennies for the build!

roddy had a cool vid on you tube demoing how to do this
worth a rake for

Cannot agree with any of the above, I had a 1 inch sycros fork welded within the last few month,s by a member on here.he is a reynolds 753 approved builder with plenty of experience.also if you sleeve it,how will you get the stem in?drop me a pm and I will give you his details
