Wear your helmet...??

I have had numerous hits with helmet on, where it took a huge whack.

Cycling, motorbiking, kayaking, climbing, etc.

Yet to be called a pussy when leading a group down extreme whitewater.

Yet to be called a pussy when hammering trails fully armoured.

Yet to be called a pussy when doing anything risky actually.

Seems to me being thought of as a pussy is much worse than the alternatives.

Seems also fellow riders involved in the same style of riding rarely show such disrespect.

I do realise the stats are not conclusive, so respect that some choose not to wear a helmet on that basis.

Fine, but not if you are out with me and my pussies.

Where does it end? Racing drivers wear full face, and I hope you'd agree wearing a full face in a family car would make you a complete pussy but is that not a logical next step from seatbelts and airbags?

At some point I think we should be taking responsibility for our own decisions and not be cajoled by the state into performing like zoo animals. Safety gear should be proportionate to the activity, skill level, age etc and for adults that should be a personal choice imo. For 99% of recreational cycling I see no need for helmets.

It'd be interesting to have some stats on the big cycling countries usage of helmets and their head injuries record. Is it just us?

If you are going to drive your 'family car' like you were in a race, then it may be a good idea to war a full face helmet.

Therefore ,if youre not in a mtb race theres no need to wear a helmet.

I really struggle with the I'm not in a race, or I'm careful argument.

It probably doesn't matter that much how fast you were going when a car plows into you!

I do sympathise with this view when off road though.

In my experience of being on the roads, as a cyclist, moped rider, pedestrian and car driver it is not my skills, ability and awareness that are the problem - its everyone else! I have been in 3 RTA's in a car, all unavoidable by me and none my fault. All were 40mph or less, all could have been me on a bike doing something recreational. I balance this risk against the low downside precaution of wearing my helmet.

I don't care if you do or don't, I am for free will. The only sensible argument against is that the risk is so low I don't need to or a view that they don't work!

Either way I have judged that the precaution is proportionate to the risk and that they do protect you.

I trade off the looking like a pussy by assuming that those that don't are intellectually challenged...!

"Wear Your Helmet...If you want to.

That would 'cover' it I think.
