Wear your helmet...??

Actually, I do LIKE helmets (except for in TdF and other races where they obscure the faces of the stars and make them look stupid).
It's the commuting pro-wannabees in helmets I'm having probs with.

:D

It wasn't so much you that was laughable, it was the other 10 pages of tripe. Although your argument falls under point 2 really! It's not the helmet that makes them a helmet...!

Until I read this thread I had no idea you could be helmetist.

Until I read this thread I had no idea there were so many helmets!

It would appear that those in favour have a degree more common sense, whilst those against tend to be more antagonistic in their justification??

Those for generally see it as a safety issue, whilst those against seem to see it as a slur against their god-like cycling skills which can only be hampered if forced to wear a helmet??

Sometimes I do, sometimes I don't - after a few miles it doesn't feel any different either way...

i think you missing the point, it not being for or against, its about personal choice. i don't need anyone telling me whether or not i need to wear a helmit. im all grown up now and i can think for myself. if im going to throw myself down a mountain ill probley wear a lid, if im going for a bimble round the park i probley wont. im not sure how you could be against helmits, its not as if anyone is going to stop people wearing them?

Thats not all, I remember an earlier post saying wearing a helmet ruined concentration to such an extent an accident was enevitable

You mean this?

I personally choose not to wear a helmet, simply because its presence annoys me so much that I can't concentrate on the important things.

I never used the word "inevitable". However in my case it increases the risk by a large amount indeed.

By the way : If you want to use one sentence from a post, you might want to read the post properly to avoid taking things out of their context.

I agree Gibbleking.

I personally choose not to wear a helmet, simply because its presence annoys me so much that I can't concentrate on the important things. I hear that complaint from a lot of other people with autism, so it's not like I'll ever be able to "man up" or "get over it". I simply can't function properly in conditions I'm not comfortable with, and having something strapped to my head is one of those things.

A friend of mine has a kid that'll need cycling lessons soon. When the time comes to teach him how to ride on the street, I'll make sure to wear a helmet tho, as I want to set a good example.
It'll be quite loose and therefor pretty much useless in an accident, but I merely want to set an example for the kid and let him learn to use it.
Once he has good control of the bike and the maturity to properly interpret and understand traffic, he's free to make his own choice.

I was merely explaining MY reson for not wearing one, not telling people that they shouldn't wear it. If you read beyond the bold part, you'll see that I agree that helmets have their use. Just not for me.

It may be 'personal choice' at the moment, but it's only a matter of time before the edict comes down from Brussels that they have identified another high-risk demographic in need of some preventitive legislation, then see where your point of view gets you... ;)

They can't. Such a law affecting this many people will be impossible to enforce.

Besides, a caretaker government can't pass new laws.

Crash helmets; seat belts; drink-driving; smoking in public places; blah, blah, blah...

...affects far more than a few disgruntleds cyclists.

The anti helmet brigade are laughable - if you read this thread, and I have, their argument basically boils down to:

1. Nothing has hurt my head yet.

2. It makes you ride like a nob.

3. It makes you look like a pussy.

This is natural selection at work....!
I think it's actually more that we're adults with the ability to assess risk for ourselves.

I'd fully expect point 1 to be true in the case of non wearers, and interestingly for all the devout wearers there are very few claims to have had an accident where a helmet took any significant impact. Which leads me to conclude that my own risk assessment is satisfactory.

And point 3 is definitely true.
