V-Brake Spring Problem

Just wondered whether you can remove the spring adjuster element of a v-brake arm?

Trying to centalise the pads, I found the small hex bolt was spinning in its thread. Thought the bolt threads might have stripped, but on closer look I realised the spring adjuster housing had cracked.

They are Avid Arch Rivals. I can't see any obvious way of removing this part of the arm / caliper, and not even sure if you can replacement spring assemblies, but since rest of brake is very good, be a shame to bin em...

As a temporary fix you could glue in the screw and adjust by bending the wire.

As above but if you use epoxy and a slightly larger screw some adjustment will be possible.
P.S.is that dirt on them there brakes :?: yuk

Spring kits are available from Avid...ask your LBS to order one or two?

just bend the straight part of the spring arm slightly to centralise them.

look out for an odd Avid arm to cobble the adjuster housing off of - they should apart with a screw driver... I had this happen to me and that's how I fixed it

OK, thanks for replies, you're right, using a screwdriver the spring assembly did eventually come away - probably the first time its been off in 8 yrs...

Any idea if PTFE tape would provide enough meat to 'fill out' the threads?

If not, I'll try glueing the screw in, but if just having one side of adjustment limits my setup too much, I'll pick up an old arm off the bay or here and make one good one.

Any idea if the spring assemblies on the Single Digit arms would work with an Arch Rival arm? There seems to be more of them about.

Last resort - new spring kit from LBS...
