V-brake pads with threaded posts in cantilever brakes?

This could be a very stupid question, but...

I need to replace some cantilever pads, and as it's typically the case whenever I need something, I have loads of v-brake spares but not cantilever. Is it ok if I use those, even if the posts are threaded and not smooth? I've tested them and they seem to have a very slightly smaller diameter but the brake arms (some DX M650 ones) grab them fine...

I know you can't use threaded steerers with an ahead headset/stem, but this is a completely different case and surely ok, but wanted to be sure...

You could use them and it would work. Plenty of people also say you can use a threaded steerer and an ahead stem. Personally I wouldn't do the latter but may try the former.

You can get canti mount fit v pad holders. I'd prefer to do that myself.

I’m building a bike now with threaded steerer and threadless headset and stem. The steerer is long enough to allow this.

The Threaded steerer needs to be so long that the Threaded section is nowhere near the bottom of the stem

- the plain steerer tube is the same diameter and thickness, but the section with the threads cut in will not handle the forces adequately,

Eventually the fork steerer will break at the threads from the leverage applied by the stem clamp.🤕

No probs if the threaded section is above the stem clamp bolt.

Your brakes are a safety- critical item.

Your (and most) canti brakes take an 8mm stud, preferably alloy, and are designed to give adequate grip under high compression and torsional forces.

If you fit a 6mm Threaded stud through the 8mm plain hole, you might be able to clamp it, but it will only be a fraction of the strength of joint.
Additionally you could well damage the brake fittings.

Pads are cheap - just use the right ones.
Aztec canti pads are cheap and have an alloy stud for superior grip.
