V Brake fitment - Does this look right?

Hi

I wonder if I could get some opinions please?

I'm looking at updating my 1996 Trek 950 from STX canti's to V Brakes. Higher models in the Trek range featured V Brakes so I thought the brake fittings would be a straight swap. However the V Brakes don't fit as I would have expected.

Firstly this is the STX Canti fitment. The arm sits right upto the but of the frame and the post is flush with the end of the arm.

This is the Deore XT M739 fitment which I'm not sure of and would like your thoughts on.
The arm sits pretty ok up to the post but the post is short of the end of the arm. Is this right?

I tried a pair of Deore XT T780 and they seem to sit even worse as they don't fully sit back to the post. So sit even further forward.

Can I have your thoughts please?

thanks

Re:

You may have to 'persuade it' onto the mount with a few gentle taps. As long as the end of the spring is in the locating hole on the mount you should be ok.
As for the V brake sitting forward of the mount, it's ok too ;-)

Re:

Thanks for your reply.

The arm slides fully on to the post and bottoms out with the pin well located in the middle hole.

Thanks for letting me know about the post length also, only having the original Canti's for reference I wanted to check it was correct.

Cheers

Re:

Just ensure you use allen bolts long enough to secure the V Brake to the mount, due the brake sitting proud of the end ;-)

Re:

Thanks, I will do.

The bolts that came with the T780's are longer than the originals.

Cheers

Re:

the pivot bolts attached to the frame can be different lengths I believe, some frames they are removable, some seem to be built in (and unchangeable) depending on make and spec etc. Not sure what you have. Pics ? Maybe you could get longer posts for a belt and braces approach, or as said below.

The V-brake sits proud as it runs on it's own bushings, all that middle bit stays still and acts as a beefed up boss.
The boss is just there to put it on.
Nothing to worry about. High end Canti's did the same. :)

Re:

Thanks for all the replies.

My posts are welded on, they are 21.5mm long. With a 5.5mm collar.

I'll make sure the bolts are a decent length to get a good amount of thread inside the post.

Thanks for clarifying the situation as I only had the originals as a point of reference.

I'll get into the shed and start the conversion.

cheers

Re:

Ah yes. I remember the issue. Some models of shimano supplied their
own bolts to help the problem, basic cantilever bolts have a button head
where LX m600 supplied a bolt with a shoulder to steady the body of the v brake
at the front.

Re:

Thanks for the info.

I was thinking about a collar to fill the void but that's a much better solution. I'll have a look and see if I can find some.

Cheers
