upgrading brakes old dawes horizon

Hey,
Road brakes were designed to brush of speed so as to keep up momentum.
Single pivots are excellent brakes and shimano 105 slr are considered the pinacle of these. Buy some, for not much cash.

but would they be any different to the weinmen brakes i have on there? (both being single pivot)

Also.. it's a touring bike. Just don't want to crash spectacularly when it's got panniers on

Alloy rims make a great difference, better quality brake blocks will also help.
Check rims are steel though as polished alloy rims that look like steel are not unheard of !
Best thing I did for my very elderly Dawes Galaxy was dual pivot caliper brakes :D

Hi Trickydisco

I am attempting the same upgrade, shifting my old 105 (BR-1055) (7 speed) groupset from my now, trashed dawes to a cheapy temp frame. The removed single pivot brakes are - Weinmann 500s. But the brake stay tubing will not accomodate the length of bolt required to grip the 105 fixing bolt, which is a lot shorter than the Weinmanns. Plus the later frame's (the dawes) brake stays allow the allen key fixing for the 105 caliper to seat properly.

Below is a pic which may better explain.

Im a bit stuck now but hopefully this will prevent you collecting unnecessary parts should your frame be unsuitable.

If you want a pic of the two different brake stay tubes let me know.

If anyone has any fixes to allow this retrofit, yes please, as I'm still without a bike.

Good luck TD

the dual pivot in the photo is for the rear stay. the front one is much longer

It might be OK, but you need to watch the clearance underneath the callipers. Standard race ones are not so likely to fit.

You may need deep drop callipers to get the space for the fattish tyre and mudguards. Going too close is a definitely bad idea, especially on th efront as a stick can get swept up by the tyre then jam the front wheel. It's not fun, especially the hospital food.

The callipers to look out for a RX100 deep drops. Alhonga also do some, usually a fair few around.

If you are going for new, then try a non-series Shimano deep drop calliper. It's a special for Audax bikes that Shimano make. Bike shops who know their stuff will be able to source it. Alternatively try an Audax bike specialist like www.spacycles.co.uk

Lots of Road shops will turn up their noses and say they don't exist, but they do.

As far as I remember the Pauls ones need special Mafac type braze-ons. It's probably not worth getting these fitted to the Horizon frame - it's not a bad frame, but I'd be saving my money for a Super Galaxy one or similar in 531ST.

Pauls now do the racer as centre mount (non braze on)

I took my bike into evans (yes i know) as i needed a new seatpost and the guy said dual pivots won't be any more advantage than what i've got now
