Updated Alan Super 1988 road bike

Retro Newbie
This is my recently updated and modernised Alan Super road bike. I've owned it from new. Originally had Shimano Sante groupset throughout. Later added 105 STI kit. This year I luckily found some new, old stock of a later Alan non lugged , aero forks , aheadset style. Added ITM headset , bars and stem. USE alien seat post . Shimano RS20 wheels , Schwalbe Lugano tyres. Original Flite saddle.

I have always loved this frame and will never sell it. It was great to bring it up to date. Loads of newer younger cyclists have looked at it envy , when compared to their oversized alloy or carbon frames. I weigh less than 10 stone , so the flexibility isn 't an issue wit my low gear pedalling style.

I think that it's a nice combination of old and new.

Apologies to all the hard core Alan fans who would prefer it to be kitted out with retro campagnolo kit.

Not many cyclists who can say that they have owned and ridden the same alloy frame for 23 years though !!!!

I do like Alans. I have an earlier version with lugged/crown forks. When you say you found some NOS forks, does that mean there may be more than one set?

Welcome to the forum!

New old stock Alan forks

Yep , i got them from a cycle trader on ebay. £ 50 plus postage , with an un cut steerer tube. I'll get the details from my ebay records.

New old stock Alan forks

The ebay trader was "stigshed". Don't know whether he has any more or can get some.
I guess that I was very lucky.

yes, I also love the Alan frame,it was the insperation for my frame build in the 80s , yours looks in very good condition too. It doesnt matter if you have the newer group on it its the frame that is so cool and that just makes it more fun to ride ,and it needs to be used.

Very nice bike. I think they have a huge amount of style you just don't get with more modern frames.

The frame's very similar to mine. I love mine too.

The modernisation you've done is in good taste so I wouldn't worry about it. I've gone semi modern myself, went for full alloy campag but a more modern group with brifters.

Alan Super 1988 Comments

Glad that my renovation has appealed to a few of you Alan devotees.

They really are a modern classic.

Did a 45 miler last week on it and it was far more forgiving on the bumpier rural roads than my more modern oversized alloy bike with carbon forks.

 bike, good to hear you have been riding your Alan for 23 years and she's still going strong, i've always loved Alans since i first seen one in the 70's but could never afford one in my youth. I built up a NOS 90's frame (current rBoTM entry) 6months ago but got a poor response from a couple of LBS's before i'd built it, saying they flex, crack, split, etc and that i should have bought a modern bike, I'm 13.5 stone and feels great on the road, definite modern classic :)

I got the same from a bloke I know who's really into his cycling. He saw my alan and said "oh, you've got the wrong frame there dan"

So now having something that's beautiful, stylish and great to ride is wrong? Just because it may go wrong at some point?

I'll take my chances i think!

The funny thing is Alan dominated the world cyclo-cross championsips and supplied TDF teams with flexy and prone to break frames for years :? Tbh most of the negative stuff i've heard came from people who have never even ridden an Alan
